Reconstructing communities of the past is an interesting and fascinating task. Indeed, it is vital to our understanding of the past and discovering the ways in which our ancestors lived, and how they interacted and were organised. There are several methods of research by which we can discover this level of detail in the day-to-day community life of the past. William Hoskins, in his seminal work The making of the English landscape discusses how the population and landscape were shaped and reshaped – communities and their environs influencing one upon the other.
